Insurers
Regarding Rhode Island’s insurers, the OHIC has two major roles. The first is to guard the solvency of insurers. From time to time, the OHIC will make recommendations about such things as optimum insurer reserve levels with the goal of preventing a situation where a carrier might fail to meet its obligations to Rhode Island subscribers. Additionally, as part of its mandate to improve the health care system, the OHIC engages insurers about a variety issues on an ongoing basis such as the affordability of premiums and the reform of payment systems and plan designs to encourage transparency, quality care and wellness.
