OHIC Regulation Requires Readability of Health Insurance Forms

Cranston, RI March 27, 2009 — The Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) has proposed to adopt new regulations which would require that by May 2010, all individual and group health insurance forms administered in Rhode Island must not exceed an eighth grade reading level. These proposed “Standards for Readability of Health Insurance Forms” apply to all health insurance documents such as health insurance policies, certificates of coverage, and summary plan documents and sets the highest standard for health insurance readability in the nation.
