Consumer protection is at the core of all of the work of the Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner. OHIC is here to help consumers understand the healthcare system, and to protect Rhode Island consumers by making sure federal and state laws are followed.
LET THE BUYER BEWARE:
Recent Increase in Fraudulent Activity
There has been an increase in the number of reports of Rhode Island consumers being contacted by insurers or agents who are not licensed in Rhode Island trying to sell “low priced” health insurance. This may be unlawful practice, and consumers should not to share any private information unless you have independently verified that you are speaking with an appropriately licensed company or individual.
Often, the sellers are promoting insurance products that are very low cost, but that actually cover none or very little of the health care that you need insurance for. These misleading “policies” are often not allowed for sale in Rhode Island.
Should you need information about a health insurance policy, or any other health insurance question, please call our consumer assistance partner, RIPIN, at 401-270-0101.
If you suspect fraudulent activity please contact the “Consumer Protection Unit” of the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office by visiting: http://www.riag.ri.gov/ConsumerProtection/About.php
